Zombeo & Juliet…the Interview

The annual OLSH Haunted Hallway is coming up! Before or after the students scare you throughout the school, stop by the auditorium at 7:30 to see the Fall Play, Zombeo and Juliet. This fun and spooky show is a twist on the Shakespearean classic, Romeo and Juliet. We got in touch with the stars of the show, seniors Jordan Mastele and Kristian Biega, who portray the characters of Romeo Montgomery and Juliet Decapitate. The following are the questions and answers to their interviews.

Q.) What roles have you played in previous fall plays?
J.) I’ve been involved in all 3 fall plays that we’ve done over my 4 years at OLSH. In You Can’t Take it With You I played Mr. DePinna, and in Varney the Vampire I was Varney’s stunt double and also part of the Stage Crew.
K.) I played Mrs. Miriam Kirby in the 2013 production of You Can’t Take it With You, and Signora Bell in the 2014 production of Varney the Vampire.

Q.) Without giving too much away, what is your favorite scene in this show?
J.) My favorite scene is hard for me to pick; they’re all hilarious to me. I just have to say any part of the show where we interact with the audience. Those are the most fun scenes to do.
K.) My favorite scene in the show would have to be the Decapitate party. I love the costumes and the Thriller dance!

Q.) What is your favorite song from this show?
J.) Lost my Heart, because it gives off a Grease-y vibe. I get to pull out my inner Danny Zuko.
K.) My favorite song in the show (that I get to be a part of) is the Finale the Zombie Crawl. It is upbeat and a great way to end the show! My favorite song that I am not in is Nummy Goodness. 🙂

Q.) What is your favorite quality about your character?
J.) I’m impressed with my constant sarcasm.
K.) I really like Juliet’s toughness. She is very much like the classic, girly, love-struck Juliet, but she is not one to be messed with. She truly loves her family and friends and would do anything to protect them…even kill a few zombies if need be.

Q.) How long have you been involved in OLSH theatre?
J.) I’ve been involved in OLSH theatre for all four years.
K.) I have been involved in OLSH theatre since freshman year. One of the first performances I was involved with was with the Theatre at Haunted Hallways. Since then, I have done 3 fall plays, 3 Spring Musicals, and 2 Summer Bootcamps. OLSH Theatre has been a huge part of my high school career that I have had an amazing time being a part of.

Q.) What will you miss most about the OLSH theatre department?
J.) I will miss all of the lovely people, of course. Ms. Manuel, Mrs. Nowakowski, and Mrs. Taylor are my best friends.
K.) I will miss being with this group of people the most. Musical gives you a chance to meet new people and make incredible friendships. Everyone in this department is so talented and fun to be around. Each year it gets harder to say goodbye to the senior class; I don’t know what I will do this year!

Q.) What do you think audiences will like most about this show?
J.) The audience is in for a treat. A lot of shells have been broken and breakout actors are really going to surprise you with what they’re going to be doing on stage.
K.) I think audiences will enjoy the fact that this is the classic romantic story of Romeo and Juliet…but with a zombie twist! It has silly zombie humor, catchy tunes, and an ending that they will not see coming.

Q.) Have you ever been in Haunted Hallway before? What did you do?
J.) I love doing Haunted Hallways! My favorite memory is from freshman year when I dressed as a zombie, pretended I was dead, and as people passed me I crept up behind them. I scared a group of middle-aged women so badly that they started to run from me.
K.) I have participated in Haunted Hallways since freshmen year. However, I have only stayed with the theatre department because I am too scared to work anywhere else. My first Haunted Hallway I did various Halloween skits, and sophomore year, I dressed up as Christine Daae and haunted the theatre once again with the Phantom. Last year I did not do any haunting, but participated in the fall play Varney the Vampire.

Q.) What is your personal favorite OLSH production that you have been in?
J.) My favorite production I’ve been in at OLSH has to be last year’s spring musical, The Addams Family. It was such an experience performing on the Benedum stage and it’s something I’ll never forget.
K.) My personal favorite OLSH productions would have to be (for fall play) Varney the Vampire, and (musical) The Addams Family. It was such an experience performing on the Benedum stage, and it’s something I’ll never forget.

Q.) Do you plan to continue performing after you graduate?
J.) Of course! Performing has become an important part of my life. If I go to a university I plan on being involved in their theatre program along with nursing. The big plan is to go to nursing school and join a community theatre.
K.) I hope to continue performing after graduation. I have so many memories with the Theatre Department that I will take with me after I leave, so I hope to continue these experiences after I leave here. Theatre at OLSH has only increased my love for the stage and my appreciation for the hard work that goes into the show.

You can see Kristian and Jordan in the fall play this Saturday at 7:30. Prepare to be spooked!
