“Live Long and Prosper”

Autumn C.

The beloved Leonard Nimoy passed away at 83 years old on February 27th, leaving behind him a legacy. Along with acting, Nimoy was a photographer, a writer, a director, and a singer. However, despite his many endeavors, he is most known for his role as Spock. From Star Trek’s original television show in the late sixties, through various movies and spin-offs, up until the recent franchise reboots starring Chris Pine, he can be seen as the half-human, half-Vulcan. Spock always said to live long and prosper, and that is something Nimoy did. His well-loved character is still a fan-favorite, even today. Spock was intelligent and often logical to the point of apathetic. This contrasted greatly with co-star William Shatner’s hot-headed James Kirk.

Spock represented anyone who ever felt out of place. He is an outsider, never properly fitting in anywhere. In a 2003 interview, Nimoy said, “As a Jew from Catholic Boston, I understood what it was like to feel alienated, apart from the mainstream.” People around the world mourned his death. Shatner and director J.J. Abrams both said how much they love and will miss him. Even President Obama released a statement proclaiming, “Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy.” His passing also greatly affected Zachary Quinto, the only other person to play Spock. “[Nimoy] became much more of a father figure to me than anyone else in my life,” he said. “It was that that I really cherished and will continue to cherish even in his loss.”
