Insidious: The Red Door came out in early July, and is the most recent film in the Insidious franchise.
The movie follows a grown Dalton Lambert and his father Josh Lambert. Dalton is off to college and Josh tries to reconnect with him after a falling out they had when Dalton was young. Dalton is an Art major, and his first project is a painting from the heart, he is instructed to not think and just paint what he feels. Throughout the movie we find out that this painting unlocks the door to a past where Dalton and Josh were able to astral project into a realm known as the Further. They eventually get trapped in the Further while trying to escape past demons who have come back to haunt them.
Overall I feel that this was a good movie. It brings us back to the past and gives us and the characters closure. I thought that the plot was really interesting, with Dalton and Josh rediscovering their ability to astral project and eventually deciding to remember that they have these abilities instead of forgetting them like they did in the second movie.
Aside from the plot, there were a lot of little details that enhanced the realness of the movie making it feel less fictitious. I like fictional movies, but with horror films little details that make the film seem real and are what make the movie scary. I feel that they make us as viewers think about the situations in the movie happening to us, and amplify the scary aspects of the film.
A slight detail that I enjoyed is when Dalton is unpacking and he pulls out his childhood night light as he is afraid of the dark. He didn’t know then why he was afraid of the dark, but found out later in the film when his night light stopped working and he had found himself in the Further for the first time. This detail adds suspense to the movie and also that extra hint of realness that makes the scene creepier.
