The OLSH boys soccer team has qualified for the WPIAL Class A playoffs for the 2023 season.
The Chargers finished the season with a record of 8-3-1 in section play and 11-5-1 overall. This was enough to give them the 10th overall seed. OLSH will match up against 7th seed Bentworth, the number 2 team from Section 2. This first-round game will take place on Saturday, October 21st, at 3:00 p.m at South Fayette High School.
The Chargers are led this season by eight seniors, including Captains Danny Bourgeois, Mark Russell, and Greg Mineard. When asked about the postseason, Mineard noted, “We are excited to get some wins in the playoffs and look forward to getting our rematch against Sewickley in the second round.”
Despite being underdogs, this is what captain Mark Russell had to say: “We are ready to show what we can do in the playoffs and ready to get to the WPIAL championship.”
New head coach Nick Romano started the season with an impressive showing in the Indiana tournament, including a win over the 3A host Indians in penalty kicks. The win earned the Chargers a spot in the tournament finals, where they lost 0-1 to Altoona, a 4A team.
After four straight wins by a combined score of 17-5, OLSH fell to eventual section champions Sewickley in a tightly contested 2-1 loss. A mid-season slump followed, with four losses in six games, which saw the Chargers fall to third place in the section. Coach Romano got the boys back on track with four wins in the last five games, including a great 3-0 win over the 1A Section 3 co-section champion Springdale Dynamos.
Coach Nick Romano is joined by assistant coaches Brandon Scott and Aiden Wrabley, along with goal-keeping coach Dan Kilburg. Coaches Romano and Scott attended Quigley Academy and took their talents to Walsh University in Ohio. Coaches Wrabley and Kilburg are OLSH alumni.
The Chargers play their home games at Youthtowne Field in Clinton, PA.
