Senior Spotlight: Evan Kormik

Matthew R. '20

Evan Kormik is a well-known student around campus. Recently, he has been very successful in forensics, qualifying for the national competition for the second year in a row. He also has joined the baseball team this season. I caught up with Evan to talk with him about both events.

Q: So I know you just competed at the national qualifier. What piece did you do and how did it go?

A: Well, I did my program oral interpretation piece, which is basically just taking a bunch of poetry pieces, news articles and putting them all together and then performing it. You have a binder with you, and you’re allowed to use it as a prop. It went pretty well: I got second place, and I am going to Albuquerque, New Mexico in June.

Q: Congratulations on that. Throughout your forensics career, what is your most important award or accomplishment?

A:   Well, there are a couple, but probably the one that is most meaningful to me was the one I got this past weekend. I’ve been trying to go all four years (to the national tournament), but this year was able to make it, so it has been a goal of mine.

Q: Do you plan on continuing your forensics career next year?

A: The college I am going to, Carlow University, doesn’t have forensics. It is kind of hard to do at the collegiate level, but I’m going to try to do one act plays, which is kind of like what I do now.

Q: So obviously you are playing baseball this year, I know, for the first time. What made you want to play?

A: I was at Moe’s with Jacob Gartley, and he suggested I join the team as a pinch runner, and I informed him that I used to play t-ball, so he said you might as well just try out for the team, so here I am.

Q: How’s the team looking so far this year?

A: You know, in Mr. McCarren’s words, “We’re not the most talented team. We can’t walk onto the field and just win a game,” but I feel like the team will be very successful because we have a lot of hard workers, so I think we’re looking pretty good.

Q: What do you think your role on the team is going to be?

A: Well, I’m hoping to maybe work hard enough and become the starting right fielder. If not, I feel like my role will be just to work as hard as I can and influence others to work as hard as they can and just keep the team morale up.

Q: How are your new teammates?

A: They’re very wonderful. I know most of the seniors, but in terms of the freshmen I got to meet, they’re pretty cool people and fun to be around.

Unfortunately, baseball season has been delayed due to the coronavirus, but we look forward to when things are rescheduled. As Evan said, he will be competing in the national competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June. Good luck, Evan!
