Second W.P.I.A.L. Championship Twice as Sweet
March 5, 2020
Winning a W.P.I.A.L. Basketball Championship is not easy, but to win back-to-back is something amazing.
On Friday, February 28th, the OLSH boys varsity basketball team did just that, beating Sto-Rox High School with a score of 81-71.
The OLSH student section, known as the O-Zone, came out in full force to support their Chargers. “The atmosphere was electric,” Senior Carolyn McAndrews says. “You could tell that that boys were putting their whole hearts into the game. You could feel their emotion.”
At the start of the game, tensions were high, but then the Chargers hit their stride at the beginning of the second quarter. Freshman Brad Vaughn and Sophomore Jake DiMichele made an impressive showing, along with Junior Dante Spadafora and Seniors Matthew Rees, Jake Kocent, Eric Olexa, and Jake Gartley. DiMichele scored 30 points, and Gartley had 5 charges. “The team played well together,” Freshman James Saftner says. “It was an impressive display of sportsmanship and talent.”
The boys are now focused on the Pennsylvania State Championship, and will play Youngsville at Peters Township High School on Saturday March 7th, at 6 PM.
Good luck, boys!
