Who’s the Best Spider-Man?

Matt Gauntner, Sports Writer

Spider-Man is one of the most famous comic book superheroes of all time, and considerably the most popular of the Marvels. Created in August of 1962 by Stan Lee, Spiderman has been appeared in over fifty years of comics, numerous TV shows, and a handful of movies. Since 2000, there have been six movies starring the Webslinger, which feature three different actors, but there can only be one Spider-Man. With all that said, who is the best Spider-Man?

The first “Peter Parker” of the century is Tobey Maguire who played the hero in Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) (Oscar Winning) , and Spider-Man 3 (2007). In these Sony films, Maguire plays a freelance photographer version of Spidey fighting a handful of his popular comic book enemies. Maguire ends the series being known most for the line, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

In 2012, Sony rebooted the Spider-Man character by one-upping the original films with the title The Amazing Spider-Man. Playing the role of Peter Parker was the British actor Andrew Garfield. The sequel of it, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, came out in 2014. Throughout the films Spidey focuses on defeating giant mutating lizards, a villain named Electro, and the Green Goblin, as well as his love life or rather Peter Parker’s love life with Gwen Stacy. Garfield provided Spider-Man fans everywhere with two breathtaking performances.

The newest and by far youngest member of the Spider-Man actors is Tom Holland at the age of 21. He made his first appearance as the superhero in Captain America: Civil War (2016), helping some of the Avengers fight a battle against Captain America. In 2017, Spider-Man Homecoming came out, where Holland played a young, genius high-schooler who gets recruited by Tony Stark (Iron Man) to help out the Avengers. In this film, instead of crediting Peter Parker’s powers with a radioactive spider bite, the movie gave him a suit that provides him with his powers. Holland will be seen again soon in Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled sequel to his homecoming movie.

Maguire, Garfield, and Holland all played the same wall-climbing superhero, but in a number of different ways, fighting various villains in many locations and even with younger Aunt Mays. As well as they might’ve played their role, there can only be one true Spider-Man. Who is the best Spider-Man of them all? You decide.
